Where Will the Next Volcano Erupt?

The April 14 eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano disrupted air traffic over much of Europe and stranded thousands of passengers across the world. The total cost is estimated to be $5 billion in lost GDP through May 24, 2010. But now that dust has cleared, we can see that the eruption was small by historical standards, and there is always the chance of a bigger one: At any given time there are roughly 20 active volcanoes around the world, and there are 16 volcanoes—called "Decade Volcanoes"—that are currently noted to have a history of large eruptions and a proximity to populated areas. Imagine the cost if one of those erupts.

Quote
Visualization is the graphic presentation of data -- portrayals meant to reveal complex information at a glance. Think of the familiar map of the New York City subway system, or a diagram of the human brain. Successful visualizations are beautiful not only for their aesthetic design, but also for elegant layers of detail that efficiently generate insight and new understanding. This book examines the methods of two dozen visualization experts who approach their projects from a variety of perspectives -- as artists, designers, commentators, scientists, analysts, statisticians, and more. Together they demonstrate how visualization can help us make sense of the world. Explore the importance of storytelling with a simple visualization exercise Learn how color conveys information that our brains recognize before we're fully aware of it Discover how the books we buy and the people we associate with reveal clues to our deeper selves Recognize a method to the madness of air travel with a visualization of civilian air traffic Find out how researchers investigate unknown phenomena, from initial sketches to published papers.

Locals and Tourists

Billeder lyver ikke ...

Some people interpreted the Geotaggers' World Atlas maps to be maps of tourism. This set is an attempt to figure out if that is really true. Some cities (for example Las Vegas and Venice) do seem to be photographed almost entirely by tourists. Others seem to have many pictures taken in piaces that tourists don't visit.

Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more).

Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month).

Yellow points are pictures where it can't be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven't taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.

The maps are ordered by the number of pictures taken by locals.

Blue pictures are by locals. Red pictures are by tourists. Yellow pictures might be by either.

3-D digital scanning feature - Capturing History at Mount Rushmore

I once knew a guy who had a real human skull (his father was a doctor) and he meticulously measured the x,y,z of the surface - making a stunning 3D image of Fred (the name given to the otherwise nameless guy (or girl)) ...

Global Moment in Time

A photo is said to be a moment frozen in time ... Here's a global frozen moment in time ...

Quote

There’s an interactive feature on the New York Times website that launched today that offers a global interface to photos and videos from around the world that were all taken at 15:00 U.T.C., Sunday, May 2. The global moment in time is a bit like The Day in the Life series of photo books, but this concept is a volunteer effort of mostly amateur photographers.

The Google Earth interface offers a means to spin and zoom on the globe, and the photos can be sorted by the themes of family, community, arts and entertainment, money and the economy, nature and the environment, play, religion, social issues, and work. [Via Spatial Sustain]

EXAMPLES OF LEONARDO DA VINCI CARTOGRAPHY WORK!

- LEONARDO DA VINCI MAPS: TOWN IMOLA, ITALY -

Map: Town of Imola, Cesare Borgia’s stronghold

YEAR: 1502

LEONARDO’S AGE: 50

Leonardo created a map of Cesare Borgia’s stronghold, a town plan of Imola in order to win his patronage. When presenting it to Cesare, the powerful leader must have been left in a state of awe. People at the time had hardly heard of maps let alone seen one. Maps themselves held a magical feel to them at the time as it would have seemed as if one was holding a piece of land in the palm of their hands! Cesare hired Leonardo upon seeing the map as his chief military engineer/ architect.
