Nice to see a pro establish bonds to the open source community ... and vice versa creating a fast and inexpensive connection to literally a world of data ...

New Tool Helps ArcGIS Users Become Active Contributors to Wiki World Map

Redlands, California—Esri has released a new, no-cost add-on for ArcGIS 10 that allows ArcGIS users to contribute data, using the editing capabilities of ArcGIS Desktop, to OpenStreetMap . Volunteered geographic information (VGI), such as that available from OpenStreetMap, is playing an increasingly significant role in emergency response during crises like the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. With this new, free and open source tool, ArcGIS Desktop users will be able to more easily contribute to the growing OpenStreetMap community.

The add-on allows ArcGIS users to download data from OpenStreetMap, store it locally in a geodatabase, and use the advanced editing environment of ArcGIS Desktop 10 to create, modify, or delete data. Once the edits are complete, the changes can be posted back to OpenStreetMap and made available to the OpenStreetMap community.

More details about the tool will be released over time, including access to the source code and enhanced documentation.

To download ArcGIS Editor for OpenStreetMap or to provide feedback about the tool, visit the project’s Web site at www.esri.com/osm-editor.

iphone offline maps (true maps)

Offline kort som i de go'e gamle dage ... Dog med det væsentligt bedre brugerinteraktion ...

Offline mapping like in the good old days except the UI is much better ...

True maps is the first application for the iphone that downloads openstreetmap data to visualize maps, search for places and streets and find routes totally offline, without the need to be connected to the internet (which in turn means more battery life!).

Since Openstreetmap is worldwide, you can use true maps with any part of the world. That is, you can download cities like Paris, London, New York, Tokio or Buenos Aires and have any of these in your app.

Keep your maps updated: openstreetmap is updated daily by people from all over the world. With true maps you can download the latest version of the map whenever you want.

Don´t waste your iphone/ ipod memory: true maps lets you choose the place you want to use for offline searching or routing. This means that if you want a portion of a country for example (like a city*), you will download just that and save a lot of space in your iphone/ipod memory!

And all of this is already available in the lite version!

The full version will contain:
  • Search and Edit POI. True maps will allow you to search for specific places of interest nearby and to even add your owns totally offline. Since true maps will interact directly with openstreetmap your POI will also be available to everyone.
  • Turn by turn voice guidance
  • No download limits: The lite version lets you download maps from a specific zoom level (enoguh to download very big cities). The full version has no limits in the download.
  • 3d. In the near future, all maps will be rendered in 3d.
  • Multi destinations routes.
  • Multi maps. There can be multiple maps downloaded and searched offline and you can switch between them.

Introducing a new OSM editor… Potlatch 2

OpenStreetMap users will know all about Potlatch, the online editor that appears when you click the ‘Edit’ tab on the site. Well, there’s a whole new version coming soon!

Potlatch 2 is a complete rewrite still with the same principle in mind: an editor which hits the right balance between speed, ease-of-use, and flexibility. It’s under very active development at the moment and I’ll include a link at the end of this post where you can have a look.

But there are four big new features – and one behind-the-scenes change – to tell you about first.

New feature – friendly tagging system

Potlatch 2 has a friendly, intuitive tagging system. The mapper can use graphical menus, dedicated fields, and icons to get the tagging just right – without the need to remember tag names and values.

For example, you can choose highway types from a set of icons, then add a speed limit by selecting the appropriate restriction sign.

All this is fully customisable using a straightforward presets file. Using this, you can create your own favourite tag combinations.

New feature – WYSIWYG rendering

Potlatch 2 has an all-new rendering engine far in advance of the current one.

With road names, patterned fills, rotated icons, and much more, the editing experience can be like working live on the familiar Mapnik rendering, the cyclemap, Osmarender, or anything you like -making it much more approachable for the beginner.

The Halcyon renderer used in Potlatch 2

Just like the tagging, the rendering is easy to customise. It uses a special form of CSS, called MapCSS, which lets you create wonderful-looking maps with just a few lines of text. The tagging and rendering together make Potlatch 2 ideal for ‘vertical’ mapping applications, such as a cycle-specific editor or a building/addressing editor. Stylesheets aren’t just about making the map look pretty: you can create stylesheets to help your mapping, such as one that highlights roads without names.

The rendering engine (Halcyon) is available as a compact (<100k)>
