The iPhone app, called Business Analyst Online, or BAO, links back to a wealth of geocoded demographic data stored in ESRI's geographic information system databases. Best of all, you can tap it for free.

"We think it’s really cool, because unlike any other app it will allow you to really check out a location, find out what it’s like and what kind of people live there," says Lead product manager James Killick.

Killick says ESRI is providing more than just rehashed Census data. "It’s updated demographics created by ESRI’s team of demographers, statisticians and economists who have been involved with building these kind of data sets for over 35 years," he says.

BAO was created with the needs of the real estate industry in mind, Killick says, but a search function will allow anyone to find locations that meet specific demographic criteria. [...]

Google's satnav killer - now released for the UK

Coming to a location near any well paying advertiser ... With StreetView you always arrive on a sunny day ..

In November 2009, it was the launch that satnav manufacturers were dreading; Google Maps Navigation, which effectively turned any mobile phone into a GPS navigation tool but with the familiar features and ease of use of Google Maps. And it's also free.

Today Google Maps Navigation comes to the UK and Ireland, and will be available as part of Google Maps on any phone running Android 1.6 and later.

Even if you haven't used a satnav tool before, you'll know your way around the Google Maps interface.

My experience using the TomTom iPhone app hadn't been that compelling; it was occasionally unreliable and often failed to find a signal, even outdoors with clear skies. You always had to enter a street number - or make one up if you didn't need one address in particular. It does include a basic Google search and live-ish traffic info has always been a strong point. But can Google Maps Navigate do any better?

The Mobile Phone Becomes Self-Aware: Introducing Nokia's Mobile Bots

The tool you use the most becomes the friend who knows you the best ...

Despite the heavy press coverage of smartphone operating systems like iPhone and Android, sometimes the most intriguing mobile innovations come from other companies. Case in point: Nokia's newly released "bots" for its Nokia N97 line of handsets. These four individual software programs run in the background, learning your mobile habits by passively collecting data on how you use your phone. After gaining a sense of your daily tasks and routines, the bots personalize your phone, doing everything from rearranging your applications based on usage to automating the switch between mobile profiles.Incredible!

Four Smart Bots

There are four distinct mobile bots now available as a bundled download here from Nokia Labs, the community site featuring beta, non-commercialized programs for Nokia handsets.

Currently, the collection includes the following:

  • Profile Bot: This bot automates switching between mobile profiles - like switching to "silent" mode when you're in a meeting and switching back to normal mode when the meeting is over. The bot can be configured to suggest profile changes that can be activated with a single click or it can be set to full automation.
  • Alarm Bot: The alarm bot learns when you go to bed and when you wake up. At night, the bot suggests alarms and profile changes via your homescreen. With a single click, you can set the phone to silent mode and create a new alarm to wake you in the morning.
  • Shortcut Bot: The shortcut bot learns what mobile applications you use the most and updates your homescreen accordingly. The bot reconfigures your phone's homescreen to feature shortcuts to your most frequently used applications. As your habits change, the bot updates these links.
  • Battery Bot: This bot keeps an eye on your battery's status. If your battery needs a recharge before bedtime, you're reminded to plug it in.

In combination, what these bots deliver is a more adaptive UI and mobile phone experience. As your behaviors change, the bots learn and their suggestions change. More importantly, you don't have to configure these bots - they figure everything out on their own.

Currently, the bots work on Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 Mini handsets only. [...]

/Sik

Only Danish ...

Grontmij Carl Bro ser store fremtidsperspektiver i teknologien.

Will Future Mobile Apps “Bump”?

I bumped into this and my mind said huh ...

Adam DuVander

Last month mobile-to-mobile communications company Bump decided to share its technology, which allows for data transfer between two iPhone or Android phones. For example, its flagship iPhone app swaps contact info and photos when two phones “bump” (as in “fist bump”) near each other. Bump introduced an API, but to little fanfare.

Why there hasn’t been much interest, at least publicly, is puzzling. As TechCrunch wrote, transfering data between devices is still difficult:

It’s a problem that’s as frustrating as it is ridiculous: many of us are now walking around with incredibly powerful mobile phones capable of rendering 3D graphics and multitasking. Yet transferring small bits of data between two nearby phones is still often a total pain.

Bump Four, a Connect Four-like game

Bump has created several apps with its technology, including a Connect Four game. The company claims to have been “overwhelmed” by developer interest. And it’s reasonable to expect that they received a number of requests to join what is, essentially, a private beta. But is there enough interest for Bump to become a platform for mobile app communications? [...]
