They are often accused of being poor navigators because they can't read maps as well as their male counterparts. But women are actually less likely than men to get lost because they are better at recalling routes, new research has shown.
Although men will be better able to use a map, the fairer sex can often can get to their destination quicker on subsequent journies because they remember landmarks.
The study looked at a group of men and women from a Mexican village who were sent to gather mushrooms fitted with satellite positioning systems and heart rate monitors.

Tilbageblik på kort året 2009

Personligt er jeg ked af at mashup tanken har bidt sig så lidt fast herhjemme som den har ... I hvert fald hvad angår kort og GIS ... Det er som om at den etablerede verden ikke vil se hvad det er for en 'bastard' der er dukket op og at denne opkobling rent faktisk kan og vil meget mere end hvad man hidtil har set. Kunne man dog bare se at få de garvede i (GIS)branchen til at koncentrere sig om services istedet for webgis ... Kunne man bare få lavet brugbare snitflader til de enorme mængder af af guld (data) som findes derude (derinde) ... Kunne man da for h....... da bare få gang i en gang ordentlig enterprise mashup som kunne vise at drengestreger også kan bruges til voksent alvor ... og det meget smartere, hurtigere og mere fleksibelt ... og socialt for s..... Puha ... så fik man da lige hvæset lidt af - Godt nytår alle sammen ;-)

For ikke mange år siden var GIS, geografisk informationssystem, it-løsninger, der havde sine egne afdelinger, der havde sine egne GIS-arbejdsstationer. Det var her, organisationens eller virksomhedens geodata blev behandlet.
Men sådan er det ikke mere.
"GIS er ikke længere noget, man køber som system. GIS er blevet mainstream, og er i dag del af ESDH-løsninger og økonomisystemer. Man integrerer GIS'en i forretningsgange, når man for eksempel laver digital forvaltning. Der ligger kortdata under mange af løsningerne, som brugerne aldrig ser."
Det siger Michael Israelson, som er direktør for offentlige løsninger i den amerikanske GIS-udviklervirksomhed Intergraph og præsident for sammenslutningen af danske GIS-virksomheder i Danmark, Geoforum.
Han forudser, at der vil komme mange flere leverandører af GIS-ydelser. Nogle vil specialisere sig i datalagring og distribution af geodata og vil dermed komme til at stå for infrastrukturdelen af GIS.
Andre leverandører vil henvende sig til slutbrugere som borgere eller eksempelvis sagsbehandlere i kommuner.
"Vi er meget langt fremme på geodata-området i Danmark. Vi har formentlig verdens mest avancerede matrikelsystem, der er en SOA-baseret platform, der er gearet til fremtidige digitale forvaltningsopgaver. Over the past few months I've been talking with many people passionate about Information Visualization who share a sense of saturation over a growing number of frivolous projects. The criticism is slightly different from person to person, but it usually goes along these lines: "It's just visualization for the sake of visualization", "It's just eye-candy", "They all look the same".
When Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viégas wrote about Vernacular Visualization, in their excellent article on the July-August 2008 edition of interactions magazine, they observed how the last couple of years have witnessed the tipping point of a field that used to be locked away in its academic vault, far from the public eye. The recent outburst of interest for Information Visualization caused a huge number of people to join in, particularly from the design and art community, which in turn lead to many new projects and a sprout of fresh innovation. But with more agents in a system you also have a stronger propensity for things to go wrong.
I don't tend to be harshly censorial of many of the projects that over-glorify aesthetics over functionality, because I believe they're part of our continuous growth and maturity as a discipline. They also represent important steps in this long progression for discovery, where we are still trying to understand how we can find new things with the rising amounts of data at our disposal. However, I do feel it's important to reemphasize the goals of Information Visualization, and at this stage make a clear departure from other parallel, yet distinct practices.
When talking to Stuart Eccles from Made by Many, after one of my lectures in August 2009, the idea of writing a manifesto came up and I quickly decided to write down a list of considerations or requirements, that rapidly took the shape of an Information Visualization Manifesto. Some will consider this insightful and try to follow these principles in their work. Others will still want to pursue their own flamboyant experiments and not abide to any of this. But in case the last option is chosen, the resulting outcome should start being categorized in a different way. And there are many designations that can easily encompass those projects, such as New Media Art, Computer Art, Algorithmic Art, or my favorite and recommended term: Information Art.
Even though a clear divide is necessary, it doesn't mean that Information Visualization and Information Art cannot coexist. I would even argue they should, since they can learn a lot from each other and cross-pollinate ideas, methods and techniques. In most cases the same dataset can originate two parallel projects, respectively in Information Visualization and Information Art. However, it's important to bear in mind that the context, audience and goals of each resulting project are intrinsically distinct.

- Cloudmade currently have the best cartography of any of the online maps.
- Street-level images give improved context, whether Street View or other geotagged photos.
- Street View uses LIDAR to get the building shapes, for the fancy navigation, and bespoke cameras because the high number of images captured broke the shutters in consumer digital cameras. [I'm almost tempted to make an analogy with consumer slippy maps and bespoke GIS there, but I'll refrain.]
- Privacy concerns about Street View are not universal, or consistent.
- Kids today don’t know that they are born.
- 3D with buildings also offers more context.
- Google use their own plane to capture the oblique images for Building Maker.
- Location is everywhere (that old chestnut).
- Paper maps will, in future, have the same relationship to mainstream maps that classical CD’s do to MP3 downloads, by only being of interest to connoisseurs.

Educational researchers and policymakers increasingly call for “21st Century skills.” What exactly are these skills, and why are they important for education? One advocacy organization focused on this is the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which since 2002 has brought together business, education, and policy leaders to define these skills and indicate how they can be applied to education. These skills include information and communication, thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal and self-direction, global awareness, economic and business literacy, entrepreneurial, and civic literacy. The Partnership’s belief is that “every child in America needs 21st Century knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers, and leaders” and that a gap exists between this knowledge and skill set and what students are currently learning in school.
Recently, diverse groups gathered to produce “skills maps” that connect these skills with specific content areas. The National Council for Geographic Education formed a team, including NCGE members from ESRI, universities, and schools, to create the Geography Map [PDF]. Geotechnologies such as Geographic Information Systems, GPS, and Remote Sensing are prominently featured throughout this document. The reason why is that they can serve as powerful tools for spatial inquiry, fostering critical thinking skills about a host of issues from local to global—from natural hazards to population to invasive species, and beyond. Because GIS is a system, using it requires the ability to gather, manage, and make decisions based on real data in real contexts.
In an interview for the article, “New maps infuse 21st Century Skills”, I stated that geotechnologies help students “engage in spatial analysis and inquiry that will prepare them for today’s rapidly changing world.” For example, eighth-graders identify historic and contemporary migrant groups in their area, examine why migration occurs, investigate the changes that occur when people migrate, and present their findings.
It is our hope that these 21st Century skills maps encourage administrators and educators to infuse these skills into the curriculum to best prepare students for the future.

GIS sales to this vital industry are predicted to experience above average growth due to the expansion and ongoing management of electric power infrastructure in emerging economies and increased investment resulting from the Smart Grid initiative in the United States. The Smart Grid initiative will introduce distributed generation and new devices into the electric power grid. This will require substantial network reengineering. GIS is the likely technology to be used for the design, analysis, and ongoing management of the new network configuration. These evolving requirements are expected to increase the level of GIS adoption, upgrade, and modification within the electric power industry.
Emerging Technologies Reshape the GIS Market
The deployment of GIS server solutions, or “Enterprise GIS”, has grown considerably over the last decade. As a result, GIS has become accessible to numerous employees across an organization in sectors such as government and utilities. Over the same period, mobile GIS has become more prevalent and shows promise for increased adoption in network design and maintenance functions. More recently, the use of web services and cloud computing have become emerging trends within the industry. Spatial analysis capabilities in conjunction with customer demographic data and other general data sets are already being delivered to the market through the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.
