When Arch Coal submitted an application to strip mine Pine Creek, we were hopeful that our Administration would stand up to protect almost three miles of streams. Sadly, this was not the case. The Environmental Protection Agency recently green lighted the mountaintop removal (MTR) mine and now the Army Corps has issued the permit to blow apart Pine Creek, despite a history of serious flooding attributed by local residents to strip mining. Tell the EPA that it is not acceptable to approve any more mountaintop removal mining permits. Pine Creek was the litmus test for the EPA's new approach to mountaintop removal mining permits in Appalachia. It is clear, the "new" approach has failed. If the EPA's idea of strict guidelines is allowing mountains to be destroyed and lush West Virginia valleys to be filled with mining waste, the guidelines aren't worth a lick. Tell the EPA to do its job and protect our mountains, communities, and environment! Pine Creek is just one more reason to call even louder for the complete abolishment of mountaintop removal mining. We're taking this message to the streets of Washington D.C. on September 27th for Appalachia Rising - please join us. Save the date!
